SBM Steps Challenge

October 2020 update

The SBM Steps Challenge has gained quite a bit of popularity since it was first launched 18 months ago. What’s nice about it is that instead of being all about competitiveness, it’s become a way to encourage each other to look after ourselves by taking the time away from our desks for a quick walk. We often use the hashtags #SBMLunch and #SBLWellbeing.

We are lucky enough to be supported by some wonderful businesses who see how hard we work and want to support us by offering a prize as an incentive. To date our challenges have been supported by:

GLS

SBS Updates

Minerva Procurement

Riso

Orovia

In the beginning

Back at the end of April 2019 I put a call out on Twitter for fellow Business Managers to join me in a Fitbit work week challenge. This consists of seeing how many steps you can clock up from Monday to Friday. I needed some encouragement and inspiration to move more over the course of the day. I’d realised that I was more often than not spending my lunch break sitting at my desk working or sitting in the staff room. I needed to get out.

The last Monday of April saw the start of the first challenge. 10 SBMs showing their competitive sides and finding ways to add extra steps to their days. It worked we’d all started moving more.

Fast forward to week 4 and the challenge had grown to include 22 Business Managers and motivation being provided by GLS Education in the form of a £100 voucher for the winner. Over the course of that challenge we collectively clocked up over 1.4m steps – what a week!

Moving forward we hope to be supported even more by others in the extended Business Manager community, at least on a monthly basis.

For June our sponsor will be Riso who have provided a Fitbit as a prize for the winner of the challenge in the first week of the month. The extra special thing about the June challenges is that Garmin users can now join in too. More and more Business Managers are coming forward and we are nearly at 40 participants.

I will be updating this page with details of winners and sponsors. If you are a company wanting to provide some inspiration in the form of a prize then please get in touch. If you are are SBM wanting to get moving send me over your details so I can add you.
